Japan Address Guide
Understand Japanese address structure, prefectures, postal codes, and how to write addresses for mail and packages
Japanese Address Structure
Japanese addresses are written from the largest area to the smallest — the opposite of Western addresses.
① Postal Code (〒)
Japanese postal codes follow the format XXX-XXXX (7 digits). The 〒 symbol is Japan's unique postal mark.
② Prefecture (都道府県)
Japan has 47 prefectures — 1 metropolis (都: Tokyo), 1 circuit (道: Hokkaido), 2 urban prefectures (府: Osaka, Kyoto), and 43 prefectures (県).
③ City/Ward/Town (市区町村)
After the prefecture comes the municipality: city (市), ward (区), town (町), or village (村).
④ Block & Number (番地)
The block number (丁目-番-号) or lot number identifies the specific location within the area.
⑤ Building Name & Room (建物名・部屋番号)
Apartment/mansion name and room number come last. Example: グランドメゾン 301号室
Example Address
Japanese → English
〒150-0001 東京都渋谷区神宮前1-2-3 グランドメゾン 301号室
English → Japanese
Room 301, Grand Maison 1-2-3 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku Tokyo 150-0001, Japan
Postal Code Format
Format: XXX-XXXX (7 digits after 〒 symbol). The first 3 digits indicate the region/prefecture, and the last 4 narrow down to the specific area.
Example: 〒150-0001 → Shibuya-ku, Tokyo
