Working with Unix Timestamps
What is Unix time?
The number of seconds elapsed since 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC (the epoch), as defined by POSIX. It's timezone-independent, which is why servers, databases, and logs standardize on it.
The classic mistake: seconds vs. milliseconds
- 10 digits (e.g., 1755000000) = seconds (most backends, databases)
- 13 digits (e.g., 1755000000000) = milliseconds (JavaScript `Date.now()`)
If a conversion lands in 1970 or year 55000, the unit is wrong. Multiply by 1000 when feeding second-based timestamps to JavaScript.
Timezone trap
A timestamp has no timezone; one is applied only when rendering it as a human date. The same value displays 9 hours apart in Seoul (UTC+9) and UTC. Store UTC, display local β always in that order.
